Lots of people ask me, what is VampireKittyCity? Well, VKC originally started to assist young local bands with promotion. We had big ideas to put on shows to help young local bands get the exposure they deserved, even when there weren’t any venues for all ages acts. We even thought one day we would open up our own all ages venue. After years of hosting shows at existing venues, we realized something. It was never going to happen. Not because we didn’t want it bad enough, but because there was too many outside forces working against us. We weren’t the only ones dealing with these forces. Every venue that opened with the same idea as VKC closed with in a year. Kids always had an excuse for not coming out; usually it involved a ride or lack of money. Bands that we were trying to assist broke up, or grew up, or moved away. We tried to revive the local scene and failed. VKC shows failed too.
Not wanting to give up our interest in helping bands, as well as others, we moved in another direction. This direction involves three passions; Cats, Clothes and Music.
Today, VampireKittyCity is about wanting to help those that we feel strongly about, whether it’s a band or homeless cats. We do this while keeping our creative needs fulfilled by offering DIY and hand made merchandise in our store. A background in retailing allows us to also offer some ready made items that are just cool. It really is a joining of our passions and it keeps us sane.
So what is the deal with the name VampireKittyCity? We felt our name had to include a reference to cats; as basically we are obsessed with them. At VKC’s inception, the only cat we had in our house was Wednesday Lou, a plump female who likes to show everyone her mean side. She does this by hissing at and biting almost everyone that tries to touch her, everyone except us. This behavior got her the alias of Vampire Kitty.
We combined VampireKitty with the word City to suggest the community feel that the original VKC was trying to advocate. We understand this name doesn’t really represent what we are doing now, but we like it too much to let it go.
